Description

Two chalk pits of probable post medieval/modern date are visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Bittam's Wood, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 89990 09181. The pits are sub circular and measure approximately 6m across and lie within the boundaries of the Dancersend SSSI, Notified in 1951 for unimproved chalk grassland, scrub, regenerating woodland and plantations. They are cut in to Lewes Nodular Chalk Formation, mainly used for flint and lime. Land use in 1945 shows woodland and modern land use is the same. (1-5)
