Description
Two chalk pits of probable post medieval/modern date are visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located north of Round Spring Wood, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 89711 09725. The pits are sub circular and measure approximately 16m across. They are cut in to Holywell Nodular Chalk Formation, mainly used for clunch, flint and lime. Land use in 1945 shows pasture and modern land use is the same. The earthworks on lidar visualisations appear to be smoothed, compared to others which are less vegetated in the woodland. The pits lie just outside the boundaries of the Dancersend SSSI. (1-4)
