Description
A large irregular shaped chalk pit of probable post medieval/modern date is visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Halton Wood, Halton, and centred at SP 88885 09499. The pit is irregular shaped, an agglomeration of several originally subcircular pits, and measures approximately 45x28m across at its largest. It is cut in to Lewes Nodular Chalk Formation, mainly used for flint and lime and a hollow way runs along the south western side through the woodland. Land use in 1945 shows woodland and modern land use is woodland. (1-4)
