Description
A large chalk pit of probable post medieval/modern date is visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Halton Wood, Halton, and centred at SP 88948 09586. The pit is long and narrow and measures approximately 65x15m across and is sited between the parish boundary, the boundary of the woodland on the Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map, and a trackway also shown on the same. It is cut in to Lewes Nodular Chalk Formation, mainly used for flint and lime. Land use in 1945 shows open woodland, possibly cleared to supply timber for the trenches in World War I, but the aerial photograph is not clear enough to show the pits; modern land use is woodland.
