Monument record MBC46753 - Area of chalk pits in Halton Wood, Halton

A group of six chalk pits of probable post medieval/modern date is visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Halton Wood, Halton, and centred at SP 89005 09218. The pits are sub circular in shape and measure approximately 5-11m across at their largest. They are cut in to Superficial Deposits of Clay with Flints which overlies Lewes Nodular Chalk Formation, mainly used for flint and lime. Land use in 1945 shows open woodland, possibly cleared to supply timber for the trenches in World War I, but the aerial photograph is not clear enough to show the pits; modern land use is woodland.
