Description
A line of four chalk pits of probable post medieval/modern date are visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Halton Wood, Halton, and centred at SP 88729 08424. The pits are sub oval with a mound of upcast soil on the downhill side of each and they measure approximately 6-16m at their largest. The mounds of soil are similar in size and shape as the pits which are cut in to Lewes Nodular Chalk Formation, mainly used for flint and lime. Land use in 1945 shows open woodland and modern land use is woodland. (1-4)
