Description
A long irregular shaped chalk pit of probable post medieval/modern date is visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 40m north of Boddington Camp, Halton Woods, Halton, and centred at SP 88342 08260. The pit is irregular in shape and measures approximately 44x18m across and is crossed by a trackway; it is cut in to solid geology of Lewes Nodular Chalk Formation, mainly used for flint and lime, and Rock Chalk Formation, which is a hard chalk usually used as building stone. Land use in 1945 shows cleared woodland, possibly as a result of timber supplied for the trenches in World War I, but the aerial photograph is not clear enough to show the pits; modern land use is woodland.
