Description

A group of chalk pits of probable post medieval date is visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 250m west of the former Calloway Farm, at the northern end of Boddington Camp, Halton Woods, Halton, and centred at SP 88120 08225. The area is wooded in 1945 and remains as woodland on modern aerial photographs; the earthworks are clearly visible on lidar visualisations. The pits are cut in to Holywell Nodular Chalk Formation, exploited for clunch, lime and flint, and measures 4-12m across at their largest. Some of the listed buildings in Wendover, in Pound Street, are recorded with clunch as a building stone. (1-4)
