Monument record MBC46728 - Chalk pit in Halton Wood, Halton

A chalk pit of probable post medieval/modern date is visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Halton Woods, Halton, and centred at SP 89380 08341. The pit is sub circular and approximately 11m across and there is a narrow, raised earthwork bank on the outside, possibly from excavation of the interior. This pit is It is cut in to Lewes Nodular Chalk, mainly used for flint and lime. Land use in 1945 shows cleared woodland, possibly as a result of timber supplied for the trenches in World War I, but is not clear enough to show the pits, and modern land use is woodland. (1-5)
