Monument record MBC46725 - Chalk pits east of Halton Wood, Aston Clinton

Two chalk pits of probable post medieval/modern date are visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in pasture east of Halton Wood, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 89394 08747. The pits are sub circular in shape and approximately 10-12m across at their largest. They are cut in to Superficial Deposits of Clay with Flints which overlie Lewes Nodular Chalk, mainly used for flint and lime. Land use in 1945 shows cleared woodland, possibly as a result of timber supplied for the trenches in World War I, but the aerial photographs is not clear enough to show the pits, and modern land use is woodland.
