Description
A chalk pit of probable post medieval/modern date is visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in pasture north of Hengrove Wood, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 89552 08572. The pit is sub circular in shape and is 24m across. It is cut in to Superficial Deposits of Clay with Flints which overlie Lewes Nodular Chalk, mainly used for flint and lime. Land use in 1945 shows pasture and modern land use is pasture; the earthworks are not clear on the photos because of lighting conditions. This pit has a tree on the edge which is drawn on the Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map and is still present on modern aerial photographs and lidar visualisations.
