Description
Three chalk pits of probable post medieval/modern date are visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Hengrove Wood, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 89839 08012. The pits are sub circular in shape and range in size from 8-16m across at their largest. They are cut in to Superficial Deposits of Clay with Flints which overlie Lewes Nodular Chalk, mainly used for flint and lime. Earthworks of trackways run all around the area which would have given access to the pits. Land use in 1945 shows woodland and modern land use is woodland. (1-3)
