Description
A group of chalk pits of probable post medieval/modern date is visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Halton Woods, Halton, and centred at SP 89695 08028. The pits are irregular in shape and range in size from approximately 11-42m across at their largest but appear shallow. They are cut in to Superficial Deposits of Clay with Flints which overlie Lewes Nodular Chalk, mainly used for flint and lime. Mounds of earth, possibly excavated from the pits are also visible around them. Land use in 1945 shows cleared woodland, possibly as a result of timber supplied for the trenches in World War I, but is not clear enough to show the pits, and modern land use is woodland. Intercutting trackways run all around the area which would have given access to the pits. (1-4)
