Monument record MBC46713 - Chalk pits in Halton Wood, Halton

An area of small chalk pits of probable post medieval/modern date is visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Halton Woods, Halton, and centred at SP 89403 08081. The pits are sub circular and range in size from approximately 5-20m across at their largest and are cut in to Lewes Nodular Chalk, mainly used for flint and lime. Land use in 1945 shows cleared woodland, possibly as a result of timber supplied for the trenches in World War I, and modern land use is woodland. Intercutting trackways run all around the area which would have given access to the pits. (1-4)
