Monument record MBC46711 - Chalk pits in Wendover Woods, Halton

A group of chalk pits of probable post medieval/modern date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 230m east of the car park in Wendover Woods, Halton, and centred at SP 89042 09028. This group of seven pits are sub circular in shape and range in size between 7m and 18m across, at their widest. The underlying solid geology is Lewes Nodular Chalk Formation, which is usually used for flint and lime. Land use is woodland on all sources available to the project; the woodland around RAF Halton was used to supply timber for the trenches in World War I and this may have been cleared at some point.
