Description

Contiguous blocks of medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation remnants of the former common open-field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located along the NE facing border of Aston Abbotts parish and centred at SP 85403 20856, the Inclosure Award for the parish dates to 1796. The ridge and furrow blocks are part of a much more extensive swathe of contiguous cultivation earthworks that extend right across the parish. All blocks are visible as extant earthworks on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s but, on aerial photographs taken in 2022 and on recent remote sensing data, about half of the mapped blocks have been plough levelled and no longer visible (1-4).

Contiguous medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow, plough headlands, furlong boundaries and banks, remnants of the former common open-field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located across the west half of Aston Abbotts parish and centred at SP 84751 20816, the ridges and furrows in the blocks of cultivation earthworks are set out on tow rough alignments, from NNW-SSE to NW-SE and from W-E to SW-NE. On aerial photographs taken in 2022 and recent remote sensing data, about half of the ridge and furrow earthworks visible as extant on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s remain visible as earthworks, with the remaining half having been plough levelled, either no longer visible or only visible as cropmarks (5-9).
