Description

Contiguous blocks of medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation remnants of the former common open-field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located across fields in the SE corner of the parish between Lane End Farm and the sewage works and centred at SP 85155 21953, the ridge and furrow blocks are part of a much more extensive swathe of contiguous cultivation earthworks that extend right across the parish. All blocks are visible as extant earthworks on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s but, on aerial photographs taken in 2019 and 2022 and on recent remote sensing data, most of the blocks have been plough levelled and no longer visible or visible as cropmarks (1-4).

Contiguous medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow, plough headlands, furlong boundaries and boundary ditches, remnants of the former common open-field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located across Cublington parish and centred at SP 83930 22454, the ridge and furrow cultivation extends throughout the parish, abutting Cublington village on all sides. Contained within this system are plough headlands and boundary ditches, as well as linear and sinuous sections of earthwork bank, being furlong boundaries of which some appear to cut through and underlie the ridge and furrow blocks, suggesting an earlier date. On aerial photographs taken in 2022 and recent remote sensing data, about half of the features mapped as earthworks from aerial photographs taken in the 1940s have since been levelled by changes to post-war agricultural practices and regimes (5-19).
