Monument record MBC46703 - Post-medieval watermeadow, Burcott

A possible watermeadow or a drainage system of probable post-medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). The features are located in fields in the low-lying part of a narrow valley adjacent the unnamed watercourse west of Burcott High Street and centred at SP 87751 23516. The whole system of interconnected linear ditches extends NW-SE for 120 metres and comprises two roughly parallel ditches up to 2.7 metres wide and about 11 metres apart aligned approximately N-S for 55 metres, intersected by 15 narrow 0.5 metres wide parallel ditches spaced about 2 metres apart extending from E-W up to 32 metres to the watercourse. Further north of this is a further curvilinear ditch that extends another 60 metres to join the watercourse at its north tip. These earthworks remain visible on aerial photographs taken in 2015-2019 and recent remote sensing data (1-4).
