Description
An axehead shaped pit of uncertain date and function is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and cropmarks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in fields about 600 metres ESE of the Old Gymnasium and centred at SP 86545 21944, the axehead-shaped pit is about 36 metres NNW-SSE and 22 metres WSW-ENE at its widest points, covering an area of about 553 square metres. It may be a post-medieval extractive pit. On aerial photographs taken in 2022, it is visible as a sharply defined cropmark, whilst on 2019-2021 dated remote sensing data, the same features are visible as a shallow but less well-defined earthwork (1-3).
