Monument record MBC46697 - Post medieval earthwork causeway, Old Park.

A post medieval linear causeway is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as an earthwork and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in the corner of a field immediately SW of Old Park and centred at SP 87100 22509, the earthwork causeway is about 5 metres wide and 75 metres long, aligned NE-SW, bridging a sharply sloping area in the field corner with higher ground in the next field. It appears to have been constructed over a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks, which are visible on either side of the feature, likely dating it to the 18th or 19th century. Aerial photographs taken in 1944 shows it to cast a long shadow, with a flat top surface and sharply sloped sides, with vehicle tracks extending from the farm to the causeway and then across the fields the other side. However, aerial photographs taken over subsequent decades, including Google Earth photography, records the gradual broadening and levelling of the feature, becoming heavily rutted likely by ever larger and heavier farm machinery. On aerial photographs taken in 2015-2019 and recent remote sensing data, the feature remain extant (1-3).
