Description

A chalk pit of probable post medieval date is visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 200m north of Grove and Henderson Barracks, RAF Halton, Halton, and centred at SP 88332 09849. Area is partly wooded scrubland in 1945 and in full woodland on modern aerial photographs but the earthworks are clearly visible on lidar visualisations. The pit is cut in to Holywell Nodular Chalk Formation, exploited for for clunch, lime and flint, and measures 74x52m at its largest. Some of the listed buildings in Wendover, in Pound Street, are recorded with clunch as a building stone. (1-4)
