Description

A chalk pit and spoil heaps of post medieval/modern date are visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 450m north east of Wellwick Farm, Ellesborough, and centred at SP 85054 08243. The area is wooded in 1946 and the earthworks are visible on lidar visualisations as an irregular shaped pit with a spoil heap next to it. A linear bank follows the southern edge of the woodland. Historic mapping shows this small area of woodland already existed by the end of the 19th century and appears to have been continuous, possibly because of the uneven ground. Pit is cut in to solid geology of West Melbury Marly Chalk Formation, no Superficial Deposits are recorded on this site. (1-2)
