Description

From its opening in 1907 the Grammar School [CAS 15611] was co-educational, however in 1956 the county council decided to create two single-sex schools, with the boys retaining the Grammar School and a new school being built for the girls on a separate site. The girls moved to the High School in 1959 (B1).
Built for a cost of £127,367 on the site of Walton Grange (demolished in 1942 following bomb damage) the High School was officially opened on 20th May 1960 by Princess Alexandra. Later alterations and extensions included a biology lab and domestic science rooms in 1961-2, library and sixth form block in 1976, assembly hall in 1978, computer room in 1982, technology centre in 1993, refurbishment of the library in 1994, drama building and IT room in 1998, music room and dance centre in 1999, language centre and front office extension in 2002, sports hall in 2004-5, new sixth form block and libray in 2012, and refurbishment of the tower block, maths and geography classrooms in 2019 (B2).
