Description

Queen's Park County School was the first in Aylesbury built by the County Council under powers given them by the 1902 Education Act. It had places for 390 boys, 350 girls and 310 infants, educating them from the age of five up to fourteen (B1).
The school was used as a military hospital during the First World War, the last wounded soldier leaving in August 1919 and the hospital was returned to school usage in the following month (B2).
The school closed in 1976 and the buildings are now occupied by Queens Park Arts Centre which opened in 1980 (B3).
The school buildings were designed by architects John and Harrold Kennard of London, built by G J Fisher of Northampton for a cost of £9,300 between February 1906 and February 1907, and were officially opened on 30th April 1907. There were separate school buildings, play sheds and playgrounds for the infants, junior girls and junior boys and a separate cookery school was available for the older girls and local school-leavers. The girls', infants' and cookery schools backed onto King's Road, with the boy's school on the opposite side of the site, backing onto Queen's Park (B4).
