Description
World War II domestic air-raid shelter recorded by KDK Archaeology in February 2024 in the garden of Elm Cottage. The air-raid shelter is buried within a raised earth mound and is brick built under a concrete roof, with a dog-leg entrance down concrete steps to a wooden door in the northeast corner, and an escape hatch in the south west corner accessed up two metal rungs. Similar in design to large communal municipal air-raid shelters but on a much smaller scale. The interior of this particular shelter would have been cramped, but sufficient to accommodate bunk beds and possibly a chair or two for a family. The shelter has survived fairly well even though both the entrance and escape hatch are open to the elements. See report for detail (B1).
