Description
A Second World War sewage works for RAF Wing’s satellite camps and airfield is visible on historic aerial photographs as structures and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 440 metres SSW of Acorn Farm and centred at SP 85618 21963, the site was under construction in 1942 and comprised a boundary fence, within which are two adjacent circular structures each about 14. 5 metres in diameter that likely acted as primary sedimentation, aeration and clarifying tanks, as well six linear aeration/sedimentation tanks, a tool house building and a destructor house building. The site is accessed by a concrete road leading from Wing Road and the site accessed by a pathway network. Outside of the works is a bucket emptying platform. The sewage works remains unchanged on aerial photographs taken in 1949 and 1961, but by 1976 it has been improved, with newly constructed structures that appear to be increasing its capacity. The wartime features and buildings remain as part of the works at that time. By 2003, the wartime tool house and destructor house buildings have been demolished, as have the sedimentation bed tanks and some other structures. The course of the access road has also been partly rerouted. On aerial photographs taken in 2022, part of the concrete roadway, the two wartime circular tanks and two other square tanks remain extant in the modern sewage works site (21, 1-8).
