Description

A Second World War sewage works for the WAAF camps at RAF Wing is visible on historic aerial photographs as structures and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field south of Wing Road about 260 metres SE of Glebe Close Farm and centred at SP 87570 22641, the sewage works served the two adjacent Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) camps and comprises a path that leads to two rectangular structures that are probably primary clarifiers/aeration tanks. To the SW of these are a number of circular parallel structures set out in several linear rows of veins in the shape of a parallelogram that is associated with sewage disposal. Still visible in 1949, all the structures are demolished by 1961. On aerial photographs taken in 2022 and recent remote sensing data, the veins of the parallelogram remain visible as both cropmarks and earthworks (1-9).
