Description

A Second World War bomb crater is visible on historic aerial photographs as an earthwork and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 170 metres SW of Mentmore Cross Roads and centred at SP 88819 20542, a circular earthwork is about 14.7 metres in diameter. A second bomb crater lies about 140 metres to the ESE. Presumably these are German bombs, possibly dropped in an attempt to target the adjacent crossroads. The earthwork remains visible in 1961 but has been filled in and levelled by 1976. On aerial photographs taken in 2022, there is no evidence of the crater but on remote sensing data dated to 2020, there is a suggestion of the slightest hollow in the crop in the field at that location (1-5).
