Description

Trial trench evaluation identified numerous features, only two containing datable finds. A pit contained late Bronze Age-Iron Age pottery and a fragment of red deer antler tine with cutmarks. A ditch contained fragments of Iron Age pottery. The ditch is part of a series of NW-SE aligned ditches thought to form an Iron Age/Roman field system. The other features were undated. Trench 42, south of Grove Farm, contained 32 postholes and interepreted as a possible circular structure. Trench 43 contained 5 postholes and possibly formed part of a rectangular structure. A series of 10 postholes/stakeholes in trench 60 have been interepreted as a possible palisade with an asosciated dich. Its location towards the southern extent of the identified archaeology is likely linked with stock control, rather than a defensive structure. Environmental samples taken across the site identified non-oak and heather charcoal fragments. Hazel nutshell fragments from a ditch in Trench 45, and a possible fruit stone/pip may indicate domestic debris and may also indicate the collection of wild food. Small assembalges of hulled barley, wheat and rye, and a single rachis may indicate processing in the vicinity (B1).
