Description
Watching brief carried out by Mike Farley in 2008 during groundworks at the rear of 16 Well Street, recorded the top 0.25m of an undated layer (deposit 3), beneath and apparently cut by the building foundation trench for the existing house. The layer was a ‘cleaner’ yellowy deposit containing small pieces of limestone with hints of tip lines rising to the north, and with large pieces of limestone probably part of the deposit. The limestone is apparently tipped in and does not form part of a structure and leaves open the question of whether the limestone derives from the ‘natural’ of the castle mound or from demolition or decay of early structures on the top of Castle Hill. Whatever its origin, the potential thickness and tip lines in Deposit 3 might indicate that it is an upper fill of the motte’s ditch. Two unstratified pottery sherds were recovered during the watching brief. See report for detail (B13).
