Description

CHURCH OF CHETWODE MENTIONED 1223. APPROPRIATED TO CHETWODE PRIORY 1389-91. SURRENDERED WITH THE PRIORY TO NUTLEY ABBEY IN 1460. HAD FALLEN INTO DECAY BY 1480, & SO PRIORY CHURCH (CASS 00577)(C.400M W) BECAME CHETWODE PARISH CHURCH. THE OLD CHURCH WAS GRADUALLY DISMANTLED (B2).
NO TRACE LEFT; NGR TO SITE (B1,B3).
Agreement of 1480 between parishioners and Abbot of Notley included a decree by the Bishop that former parish church to be regarded as a chapel dependant on the new parish church. Abbot at liberty to remove the font from St Martin's to the new church along with materials for repairs. Mention of trees within old churchyard. Details of agreement (B4).
