Description

Two probable post-medieval extractive pits are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field about 235 metres S of Mill Farm and centred at SP 61704 38981, an irregularly shaped area of extraction about 4,985 square metres in area has cut into a block of medieval and/or post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. Some 1`00 metres SW is a small subcircular pit about 1,419 square metres in area. The extraction earthworks have been levelled somewhat but still visible as shallow earthworks on remote sensing data dated to 2019. Not shown on historic OS map editions, it is possible that these pits date to the mid-20th century, created for the construction of RAF Turweston airfield on which they are located (1-2).
