Description

A possible subrectangular medieval moat is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field about 285 metres W of Ash Spinney and centred at SP 62863 38764, a subrectangular ditch that varies between 3.5 and 12 metres wide, with the NNW and W facing sides being linear and the ESE facing side curvilinear, the S facing side being a medieval field boundary. The ditch encloses an earthwork platform about 42 metres W-E and 57 metres N-S, within which are some section of earthwork bank. Extending about 44 metres NE from the NE corner of the moat ditch is a linear ditch about 5 metres wide that narrows to 2 metres wide at the NE end. To the W and E of the moat, two linear ditches. The moat does not appear on the 1814 OS Drawing or the OS 1st Edition map dated 1884. Visible on aerial photographs taken in 1944 as earthworks, the moat features remain visible on 2019 dated remote sensing data (1-3).
