Description

Five features identified during trial trench evaluation, comprising a gully, ditch, a possible linear, pit, and an unknown feature. Finds recovered from the features indicate they date from the medieval to post-medieval periods. The unidentified feature contained Late Saxon St Neots Ware. The ditches appear to be boundaries, and the gully used as drainage (B25).
Subsequent excavation carried out in February and March 2023 by KDK Archaeology revealed that the two intercutting ditches were earlier, dated by Roman pottery in the lower fills, with the finds recovered during the evaluation having come from the upper fills, and were interpreted as field boundary or drainage ditches. An earlier pit was cut by one of the ditches but is thought to be broadly contemporary with the ditches. A later pit cutting one of the Roman ditches was excavated during the evaluation and had post-medieval finds in the fill. Two postholes and a shallow pit were modern. A watching brief during service trenching in November 2023 was negative. See report for detail (B26).
