Description

A possible subrectangular ditched enclosure and curving boundary ditches of uncertain date and function is visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields NW of Bottlehouse Farm and centred at SP 81437 33647, the 1813 Ordnance Surveyors Drawing indicated that this area was part of woodland called Slade Coppice at that time when local woodland was more extensive and formed part of medieval Whaddon Chase. A possible subrectangular ditched enclosure is visible only on aerial photographs taken in 1947, being a three-sided enclosure ditch up 3.5 metres wide and about 72 metres NNW-SSE and 55 metres at its widest WSW-ENE, with the SSE facing side open. To the N of this is a curving boundary ditch up to 3 metres wide that extends 280 metres SW-NW. A further linear ditch 96 metres long SW-NE lies within the arc of the curving boundary. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, these feature are not visible (1-4).
