Description

Ridge and furrow field systems with plough headlands, furlong boundaries and trackways of medieval and post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks, levelled earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located within the eastern half of the parish of Buckingham and centred at SP 71376 33288. Ridge and furrow field systems are almost contiguous across the eastern half of the parish, visible as earthworks and levelled earthworks in the 1940s, around the shrunken settlement at Bourton. The western part of the area has been affected by the expansion of Buckingham in the second part of the 20th century and no earthworks remain in these areas. Further east along the A421 towards Thornborough modern land use is arable and earthworks have been ploughed level; where land use remains as pasture, along the south side of the River Great Ouse earthworks remain around White House Farm. A sewage works, replacing the earlier sewage farm closer to the town (see MBC45210) has also removed ridge and furrow earthworks in this area. Field names for some of this area are shown on the 1591 map of Maids Moreton. (1-28)
