Monument record MBC45349 - Earthworks of a possible farmstead site approximately 170m north of Dunstall Lodge, Padbury

The possible site of a farmstead of medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 170m north of Dunstall Lodge, Padbury, and centred at SP 71925 31205. The earthworks mapped here are between areas of well preserved ridge and furrow earthworks along a trackway. A 1591 map of the parish of Padbury shows the trackway as Greate Bamrache Waye with Dunstall Hill at the southern end. The placename Dunstall is associated with the location of a farmstead and the earthworks may be interpreted as boundaries within a dispersed driftway plan farmstead, where yards and buildings are situated along a routeway, with a sub circular platform of a possible building or rickstand. The earthworks could equally result from extraction activity at the site of an extractive pit, also marked on the 1591 map, approximately 140m to the south (see MBC45218). (1-5)
