Description

Probable medieval charcoal burning platforms are visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields south of the golf course and centred at SP 68720 41950, eleven very dark roughly circular discrete spreads of various sizes from 10 to 22 metres in diameter are scattered over an area about 631 metres WNW-ESE. The fields in which these features are located were still woodland on the 1814 Ordnance Surveyor Drawing, part of the former Whittlewood medieval hunting forest. The 1st edition OS map shows that some of these woodlands have been felled by 1881, creating agricultural fields, within which the cropmarks are visible. It is possible that these features represent tree throws from former trees, but the large diameter of the cropmarks make this unlikely (1-4).
