Description

Scattered blocks of medieval and/or post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, plough headlands and furlong boundaries, remnants of the common open-field system, are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in Lillingstone Dayrell with Luffield Abbey parish and centred at SP 69290 40596, there are only a few scattered blocks in the north part of the parish. This reflects the widespread woodland cover of the medieval hunting forest of Whittlewood, which was still visible on the 1814 Ordnance Surveyors Drawing, but much of which had been felled and cleared for agriculture by the 1st edition OS maps in the early 1880s. In the south half of the parish, ridge and furrow blocks are more numerous and some contiguous, having been in open country on the southern edge of Whittlewood Forest. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, many of the ridge and furrow blocks remain visible (1-15).
