Description

A medieval boundary ditch and a mound of uncertain date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a close south of the Baptist Chapel in Stewkley village and centred at SP 81583 28841, a linear ditch up to 7 metres wide extends across the field between the two perpendicular field boundaries for 64 metres NNW-SSE. It is abutted to the W by a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation. Immediately E of the ditch is a small C shaped arc of ditch up to 1.2 metres wide that encloses 3 sides of a 4 metres sub-square mound. The function and date of this feature is unclear. On aerial photographs taken in 2019 and recent remote sensing data, the features are still visible (1-3).
