Description

A wide trackway of medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and levelled earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 580m north of Dunstall Lodge, Padbury, and centred at SP 71858 31685. The 1591 map of Padbury names this trackway as Greate Bamrache Waye and leads north from the village, up Dunstall Hill, towards a large area labelled as Hedges on the same map, which is depicted as probable rough/woodland pasture close to the river and no ridge and furrow furlongs are shown on this area. The trackway is visible as three parallel earthworks, former plough headlands/furlong boundaries. Each plough headland is between 8m and 14m in width, covering an area of 72m in width in total. All three are visible as levelled earthworks on lidar visualisation, for a length of approximately 570m. They appear to have been ploughed by the time of the 1940s aerial photographs. Modern land use is arable and cropmarks of the trackway and ridge and furrow are very clear through the years on Google Earth. On the 1591 map the trackway runs between two furlongs Greate Bamrache Furl on the east side and Pitt Hill Furl and Bullwaye Furl on the west side; the direction of earthworks visible can be matched to those on the 1591 map of the parish. A short length of plough headland is visible approximately 280m north of Dunstall Lodge, on the same line as the western side of the trackway and was probably part of the trackway but further features are obscured by post inclosure field boundaries and modern land use. The parish of Padbury was inclosed in 1795. (1-4)
