Description

An extractive pit of post medieval/modern date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 270m south west of Coombs Farm, Thornborough, and centred at SP 73091 232192. This is pit measures approximately 130x62m at its largest and is cut through ridge and furrow earthworks around Coombs Farm. The underlying geology is Kellaways formation sandstones and mudstones; no superficial deposits are recorded at this location. It is approximately 530m south west of a brickworks (see MBC12722) and further extractive pits are visible in the landscape around this area, a quarry and limekilns are also recorded on the Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map (see MBC12723).
