- EXTRACTIVE PIT (Post-Medieval - 1540 AD to 1798 AD)
Description
An extractive pit of post medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 180m west of Coombs Farm, Thornborough, and centred at SP 73129 32346. The pit is approximately 60x20m in size and roughly triangular in shape. It is immediately next to the road which appears to be a post inclosure road based on its very straight line and the field boundaries around it; the parish was inclosed in 1797. The pit is cut in to Cornbrash limestone, often used as a building stone, but all of the surrounding walls and buildings on Google streetview on the east of the orad are constructed of brick. A limekiln is recorded to the north (see MBC12723). (1-2)
