Description

A cluster of three post-medieval extractive pits, possibly coprolite workings, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on Rammamere Heath and centred at SP 92131 29990, three irregularly shaped extractive pits are about 278, 229 and 184 square metres. Documentary evidence indicates that in addition to the nearby Great Brickhill coprolite workings, the owners Messrs Morris and Griffin continued to work the local coprolite deposits. Coprolite extraction was reported in operation at ‘rammy mare field’ during the late 1880s and continued until the seams had been exhausted. There is a large area of probable coprolite workings immediately adjacent nearby Rammamere Farm and it is possible that these workings were part of that continued coprolite extraction (1-4).
