Description

Medieval and/or post-medieval hollow way and tracks in woodland are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located within and adjacent Oak Wood and centred at SP 91088 29399, a sinuous ditch or hollow way up to 12 metres wide borders field boundaries and extends NW-SE for 900 metres, half of which is outside the wood to its north. This wide trackway or hollow way is recorded as a path on the 1890 dated 1st edition OS map. Halfway along its course at the NE corner of oak Wood, a linear track extends SW in broken sections for about 320 metres to a post-medieval sand pit, forking 273 metres SSW about halfway along its length. The association with the extractive pit is evidence on a 1947 dated aerial photograph, where a clear linear ride in the woodland extends to the edge of the extraction site, though is not recorded on historic OS map editions (1-4).
