Description

A probable post-medieval coprolite workings are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in fields about 330 metres SE of Rammamere Farm and just W of the boundary of King’s Wood and centred at SP 92472 30536, an irregularly shaped extractive pit about 593 square metres is one in a cluster of four. Documentary evidence indicates that in addition to the nearby Great Brickhill coprolite workings, the owners Messrs Morris and Griffin continued to work the local coprolite deposits. Coprolite extraction was reported in operation at ‘rammy mare field’ during the late 1880s, employing local agricultural labourers as coprolite diggers and continued until the seams had been exhausted. There is a large area of probable coprolite workings immediately adjacent the farm and it is possible that these workings were part of that continued extraction (1-5).
