Description
An extractive pit of post medieval/modern date is/are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 430m south east of Bourton Grounds, Buckingham, and centred at SP 72952 32736. This pit is shown as a small pond on the Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map but has been enlarged to 54x37m, at its largest by 1946 and two field barns immediately to the south have been removed. Lidar visualisations show the norther part has been infilled, and is part of an arable field, but the southern part is still visible as uneven ground albeit not very clearly. It is cut in to underlying geology of River Terrace Gravels overlying Forest Marble Limestone. (1-2)
