Description

An extractive pit of medieval/post medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 210m east of Bourton Grounds, Buckingham, and centred at SP 72755 33053. This pit is visible as an earthwork, within the pattern of ridge and furrow earthworks, in 1946 but has been infilled on lidar visualisations. It measures approximately 34x18m at it’s largest and is recorded on the Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map as a pond. Underlying geology is Cornbrash Limestone overlain by Superficial Deposits of River Terrace Gravels so it could have been created for building materials or as a marl pit. (1-3)
