Description

Two extractive pits of probable post medieval/modern date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as levelled earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located approximately 750m south east of Manor Farm, Bourton, Buckingham and centred at SP 71723 33053. These two pits are either side of a field boundary shown on Epoch 1 Ordnance Survey Map and still visible on the 1961 aerial photographs but subsequently removed. Lidar visualisations show the area has probably been infilled too and modern aerial photographs show tree cover here. The two pits are 46x28m, on the north side of the boundary, and 24x31m to the south of the boundary. The underlying geology is Kellaways Sandstone and Mudstone, there are no superficial deposits recorded. (1-4)
