Description

Temporary ammunition dumps of World War II date are visible on historic aerial photographs as buildings and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located along the road between Padbury and Thornborough, approximately 410m west of Grange Farm, Padbury and centred at SP 72292 31361. The hutments are on both sides of the road, parallel to the field boundary hedge and in the field behind the hedge. There are seven hutments measuring approximately 10x4m and 6x4m in size. The longer hutments are parallel to the road and the shorter are perpendicular to the road, behind the field boundary. The hutments were temporary and usually made of corrugated metal, covered and camouflaged and they are gone by the time of the 1948 aerial photograph. There are 13 groups of hutments along the roads between Thornborough and Padbury and Adstock with a possible military camp near Coombs Farm, Padbury, which may have been to support these ammunition dumps (see MBC45223). This is conjectural and the buildings may have been associated with the brickworks to the north of Coombs Farm. (1-4)
